Blackkklansman: The latest offering of the brilliant Spike Lee is a look at tribes: white supremacists, Black activists, and the police, served up as a serious political drama played for laughs. Set in the ‘70s, the film, based on real events, stars John David Washington (yes, Denzel’s son), as Ron Stallworth, the first black cop to join the Colorado Springs Police Department. Originally assigned to investigate the militancy of the local black population by attending an appearance by activist Stokely Carmichael, Stallworth later convinces his bosses to allow him to infiltrate the local KKK. “Whitening” his voice, Stallworth makes phone contact using the usual racist rants, and is asked by the delighted Klansmen to appear in person at their meeting. To solve the obvious problem, white Ron is impersonated by fellow cop, Flip (Adam Driver), but black Ron is at the controls. Hilarious, foul-mouthed, confusing, and disturbing, Lee makes his points powerfully about our entrenched racism past and present.
