|Description:||The Winter Film Series consists of six films shown in January, February and March on Sunday afternoons at 4:00. Following each movie, we offer a simple soup and bread supper, also free, for anyone who would like to stay for a meal and a chance to talk about the film. The library has a signup sheet for volunteers to bring soup, bread and dessert.
The Wife: Glenn Close is outstanding as the supportive wife of an acclaimed writer who has just won the Nobel Prize. In this movie based on a novel by Meg Wolitzer, Close’s character, Joan Castleman, plays the traditional wife who kept the house, paid the bills, and ran the show as her slightly absent-minded husband, Joe (Jonathan Pryce), gathered accolades in his career as an esteemed man-of-letters. Celebrations galore now applaud the honoree at home and in Stockholm as the awards ceremony approaches, and a would-be biographer (Christian Slater) pursues the Castlemans, hoping to gather material. Flashbacks flesh out the story of the couple in the ‘60s--the struggling professor and the adoring student--but in Joan’s conversation with the biographer, she shows her accumulated frustration, rage, and resentment in a showcase scene as the film reveals its final secret.
