Celebrate Juneteenth at Camp Hale - FREE & open to all

A Community Gathering of Reflection, Freedom, and Connection

Camp Hale and LakesMountainsDEI.org invite you to join us in honoring Juneteenth on Thursday, June 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at Camp Hale, nestled along the shore of Squam Lake in central New Hampshire.

Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, celebrating the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Often called our country’s “second Independence Day,” Juneteenth has been celebrated in Black communities since the late 1800s and continues to grow in recognition across the country.

Here in central New Hampshire, where communities are predominantly white, Juneteenth is increasingly being recognized as a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our shared history and deepen our commitment to equity and inclusion. Last year, the Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth hosted a Juneteenth event that drew nearly 60 residents in collaboration with LakesMountainsDEI.org. This year’s celebration at Camp Hale builds on that momentum and aims to establish a lasting local tradition that fosters connection, understanding, and joy.

Join us for an evening of reflection, music, shared meals, play, and conversation in a welcoming outdoor setting. All are invited--families, friends, neighbors, and visitors--to honor the significance of Juneteenth and to help build a more inclusive community together. After the celebration, Camp Hale staff will offer an optional guided tour of the campground.

Please RSVP at https://tinyurl.com/y775w34w to help us plan. Walk-ins are warmly welcomed.
